In 1984, I graduated as a Psychologist from Universidad of Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I had the privilege to learn about Psychoanalysis. Not limited to Sigmund Freud work, but also Jacques Lacan theoretical approach, to understand and provide treatment plan to clients with a broad variety of emotional distress. Interesting enough, Sigmund Freud said that we can “cure” by working with a therapist, or within a loving relationship. Actually, everything is about relationships.
I came to Canada in 2002, with no intention of working again in Mental Health, due to my lack of Canadian equivalences, and also due to the fact that North American theoretical approach is the opposite of mine: they are behaviouralist, they want you to fit; psychoanalysis is about freedom.
In 2013 clients asked me to obtain my license again to be able to practice in this country. And that is what I did: went back to school, obtained a Master in Social Work in April 2016… and here I am now…
That is why when my clients tell me : “I am happy… ” then I ask: “are you firing me? Good for you… ”
That is probably the most meaningful moment a Mental Health Clinician can have…
